Free Tax Preparation

Free Tax Preparation done in partnership with the IRS, the focus is to assist in the claiming of tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC), and to encourage split tax refunds into savings accounts, by eligible low to moderate wage earning individuals and families. By claiming these credits and splitting refunds, individuals and families have more money to pay bills, pay down debt, etc. In 2010, over $209,000 in refunds benefited local families and the local economy. If you are interested in receiving free tax preparation, please contact 2-1-1 or Hunterdon Helpline at 1-800-272-4630.

What is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and how can it benefit me?

You could be missing out on thousands of dollars. Each year, residents of Hunterdon County lose millions of dollars by not claiming the EITC on their federal and New Jersey state tax returns. The EITC is a federal and state tax credit available to many low-to-moderate income working families and individuals.  This credit is based on how much total income a taxpayer earned over the course of a year. Even though the EITC has been around for many years, many taxpayers are unaware of the tax credits for which they qualify under federal and state tax codes.

Do I qualify for the EITC?

Yes, if you earned less than $50,000 in 2011.
