Hunterdon Housing Alliance

Despite areas of great wealth in our community, many individuals and families struggle to make ends meet and find themselves homeless, in temporary motel rooms, doubled up in tight quarters, or on the street.   hunterdon_housing_alliance_logo.jpg

The need for services is clear—the Point in Time Homelessness Survey counts the number of homeless individuals on one particular day. The January 2010 survey showed that 137 men, women and children were found to be homeless in the Hunterdon County.  It is estimated that the acutal number of people who are homeless over the course of the year is over 400.

The Hunterdon Housing Alliance was convened by United Way of Hunterdon County to bring together the collective expertise of partners who are dedicated to addressing the lack of affordable housing in Hunterdon County.

The Hunterdon Housing Alliance is undertaking a unique tri-county collaboration between Hunterdon, Warren, and Sussex Counties to alleviate homelessness. Partners from local human services agencies, County Divisions of Social Services and Departments of Human Services are working together on an approach that will utilize shared services, while still meeting local and individual needs.

The Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program (HPRP) aims to prevent families and individuals from becoming homeless, and to help those who are already homeless to be quickly re-housed and stabilized. In addition, this program will provide time-limited wraparound services through case management, housing search assistance, financial assistance for rent, security deposits, moving costs and utilities, legal services, credit and budget counseling, and credit repair services. The end goal is to stabilize households so that they will maintain permanent housing and become self-sufficient.

In addition, the Alliance is also responsible for updating and maintaining a Housing Resource Guide that provides extensive information on housing options in Hunterdon County and other services which benefit those in need.
