How does
my gift to United Way of Hunterdon County help people?
United Way of Hunterdon County is dedicated to helping the
county’s most vulnerable citizens become and remain
self-sufficient. We work by bringing together partners and
resources to tackle the root causes of health and human care
problems in six critical Target Areas. Working side-by-side
with local nonprofits, businesses, academia and government,
we lead strategies to improve the quality of life for
Hunterdon’s neediest. Through our management assistance,
volunteer and technology outreach programs, we build the
capacity of nonprofit agencies to deliver results.
What is the United Way
Community Fund?
The Community Fund supports
work in all of our Community Fund areas:
Why should I give to United Way, rather than an agency I
know and love?
When you give to the Community Fund or a Target Area, you
help support agencies and programs that United Way knows are
achieving measurable results in addressing the toughest
problems in our community. A gift to the Community Fund also
supports United Way's leadership in bringing together
various community partners -- government, business,
nonprofit organizations and volunteers -- to provide
comprehensive solutions in a way that a single organization
can't do alone. And, finally, your gift to the Community
Fund also supports the vital in-kind services United Way is
able to provide to neighborhood agencies -- services like
management assistance, technology training and help in
recruiting and training volunteers.
How is United Way of Hunterdon County connected to United
Way of America (UWA)?
Across the country there are over 1,350 local United Ways.
Each of them, like United Way of Hunterdon County, is
separately incorporated and is independently governed by a
local board of community leaders and volunteers. The money
raised in Hunterdon County stays here, supporting local
health and human service programs and initiatives throughout
the community.
United Way of America is the national service and training
center which supports local United Ways with a national
advertising and promotion program, a partnership with the
National Football League, training for United Way
professionals and volunteers and a national network allowing
United Ways to share best practices and other information.
Local United Ways pay for these services through annual
dues. United Way of America does not raise or distribute
funds.
How do I know that the
United Way is efficient with my donation?
Only 17.5 percent
of every dollar is spent on fundraising and administration
at United Way. This figure is far below the acceptable rate
of 35 percent set by the Better Business Bureau.
In addition,
United Way is able to leverage dollars raised for additional
funding from foundations and government agencies with which
we have strong working relationships. So, a donor’s $1.00
donation “to” United Way really translates into $1.51 for
the community.

Why should I participate in my company's United Way Campaign?
There are many aspects of how United Way works that sets us
apart from other charities. First, we never work alone. We
work with grassroots agencies to engage diverse partners in
business, government and academia in building solutions that
we take to scale in neighborhoods throughout the county.
United Way believes that working families deserve
opportunities to lead more productive, self-sufficient
lives, and we know that donors want results. We set goals
and measure and report our progress to the community. When
you give to United Way, you will see the results of how your
gift helps.
Plus, we provide a convenient way for you to support issues
of special interest to you. And our payroll deduction makes
it affordable to give. United Way of Hunterdon County honors
all donor designations as requested on corporate campaign
requests.
