Hunterdon Diaper Bank

Diaper Need is defined as the lack of a sufficient supply of diapers to keep an individual clean, dry and healthy.  In the United States, government assistance programs do not include the cost of diapers. This means parents or individuals on limited budgets have to find an extra $70 to $100 per month just for diapers.

In some cases, this inequity forces parents to keep their child in a wet diaper longer instead of changing it right away, which can lead to urinary tract infections and severe diaper rash.  Children without an adequate diaper supply cannot participate in early childhood education programs or day care programs, making it harder for their parents to get back to work.  Without consistent gainful employment, parents struggle to lift their families out of financial disparity and the diaper need cycle continues. This cycle impacts 1 in 3 three mothers nationwide .

For seniors, 15% - 20% of adults over the age of 65 suffer from some form of incontinence.  Fear of an incontinence incident outside the home can lead many to become shut-ins.

The Hunterdon Diaper Bank addresses this disparity by providing diapers and incontinence products to those in need through generous donations by individuals, schools, clubs and businesses across Hunterdon County.  A partnership between United Way of Hunterdon County and NORWESCAP Food Bank, the Hunterdon Diaper Bank mission is to:

1)      Ensure that families and individuals have an adequate supply of infant diapers and adult incontinence products.

2)      Raise community awareness that “basic human need” includes infant diapers and adult incontinence products, reinforcing that these needs are not currently being met

3)      Advocate for policy reform to include infant diapers and adult incontinence products as a “basic human need” for families in Hunterdon County.
