There are many way to get involved as a volunteer and make a direct impact on your community:

You can become a volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone to our work at United Way of Hunterdon county. Our volunteers help deliver programs, organize essential items, run drives for our programs, make connections and help us build community. Volunteer opportunities are available year-round and there are opportunities for children, young adults and adults alike. For our corporations, we offer corporate volunteer opportunities tailored to your needs.

Each of our volunteer opportunities are unique and some require specialized training. We invite you to explore the opportunities and reach out if you have additional questions. Learn more about our volunteer opportunities here.

You can share information

Many of our year-round programs require ongoing volunteers who are trained to help support the community. Once trained, you can volunteer for as many shifts as you'd like on dates and times that fit your schedule. Many volunteers come in once a week, while others volunteer monthly. It's your volunteer journey and we're happy to help you find the fit that works for you schedule. Outside of volunteering in our offices, we rely on our community to help us connect and share resources available at the United Way. We're happy to come speak to your group, your offices, your township or congregation about the work we do, the impact and how others can be involved. If you can help us share information and get the word out, lets chat!

Beginning in late January, we're offering FREE tax preparation for ALICE households and individuals and families facing financial hardship.

Through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, IRS-certified volunteers help ensure you receive every deduction and credit you qualify for—at no cost. That means bigger refunds and hundreds saved in tax prep fees.

You don’t need a whistle to be a coach— You just need to show up for your players in every way that matters!

Join us on January 24th for a one-day training designed to equip coaches and trusted adults with the skills to support young people facing mental health or addiction challenges.

This course will:
- Cover common mental health challenges in youth
- Review typical adolescent development
- Teach a 5-step action plan for crisis and non-crisis situations
- Explore topics such as anxiety, depression, substance use, eating disorders, and more

Sometimes, the best first aid is you. Take the course. Save a life. Strengthen your community.

Participants who complete the training will receive a 3-year certification.

We’re recruiting VITA Facilitators!

United Way of Hunterdon County is looking for friendly, organized volunteers to serve as VITA Facilitators and help create a smooth, welcoming experience for our neighbors during tax season.

What you’ll do:
✔️ Welcome clients and verify photo ID & Social Security cards
✔️ Assist with intake forms and required pre-work
✔️ Help keep paperwork organized and site flow running smoothly
✔️ Answer basic process questions
✔️ Answer calls and schedule appointments using our RingCentral system
👉 You will NOT prepare or review tax returns.

What’s required:
🕔 Commit to a 5-hour shift (day or evening)
📚 Complete required training and be certified by January 20
(IRS guidelines require certification before volunteering — we’re able to extend the deadline to Jan 20!)
